The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has revealed the fire extinguishers inside the Vienna City nightclub were out of service at the time of the Thursday night inferno.
Greater Accra Regional Fire Officer ACFO Simpson told Joy News' Beatrice Adu, that "it appears the extinguishers were not serviceable. They were overdue for servicing. The content in that extinguisher most of them were caked powder so it couldn’t function properly so the fire got out of hand”
He indicated that the electrical wiring was unprofessionally done and accelerated the spread of the fire.
Workers of the entertainment center are taking stock of the extent of damage last night after a fire ripped through the building at Circle.
Some of the workers say the fire started from a faulty air conditioner behind the VVIP lounge, but Mr. Simpson says they are yet to come to this conclusion as investigations are ongoing.
“We are picking samples of the burnt items then we put it together to enable us to discover the cause of the fire,” Mr. Simpson said.
According to him, the incident was preventable. “Every fire starts small”, the PRO said, stressing on how the workers of Vienna City were trying to put it out on their own and called the GNFS 30 minutes after the fire had started.
He explained the Vienna City nightclub building is old with several parts of it built with wood, which made it easy for the fire to spread fast.
The Greater Accra Fire Service say they will check the validity of the fire service certificate of the nightclub.
“Fire service certificates are renewed every year so we have to go to our documents to confirm whether they have a valid certificate”, Mr. Simpson said.
