A demonstration by youth in Kpone Katamanso in the Tema Metropolis has turned chaotic with some of the demonstrators clashing with the police.
Scores of demonstrators sustained varying degrees of injuries in the clash and were rushed to the Tema Genera Hospital.
Explaining the reason for the clash, Tema Regional Police Spokesperson ASP Juliana Obeng told Myjoyonline.com the demonstrators violated the route agreed on prior to the demonstration.
According to her, the demonstrators agreed to use the main Kpone-Tema road, and head towards the cemetery and then present a petition but the demonstrators violated the route agreed with the police.
She said when the police tried to control them the demonstrators started hurling stones and bottles at the police leading to the clash.
The police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Reasons for the demo
Hundreds of youth were demonstrating over lack of development in the area as well as the current power outage they are enduring.
The demonstrators threatened to raze down the Asogli power plant in 48 hours if their electricity supply is not improved.
Leader of the demonstration Samuel Owusu Mensah gave the threat in an interview with Adom FM's Issabela Ave.
The residents do not understand why Asogli would be generating power from within the metropolis whilst they endure eternal darkness.
They claim there is high unemployment rate in the area despite being surrounded by a number of companies.
The youth, most of whom are unemployed, took to the streets chanting and cursing.
Some of them also accused members of the Kpone Traditional Council of illegally selling the Kpone lands.
They claim portions of the Kpone cemetery had already been sold.

The protestors therefore proceeded to the lands in question destroyed some wooden structures and later torched them.
They want their grievances addressed with immediate effect.
