The Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation has denied media reports of shortage of relief items to assuage the suffering of flood victims. Kofi Portuphy told Joy News truck loads of items are available for distribution to the worst affected persons. NADMO came under intense criticism for not being proactive in coming to the aid of the flood victims. The Upper East Region Minister Mark Wayongo claimed he was in Accra to facilitate the transportation of the relief items in Accra to the flood victims in Bolgatanga. He said the relief items are in short supply with the flood victims reeling under intense pressure. But Mr Portuphy said this is not true. According to him as at Monday two truck loads were available for distribution. He dismissed as false allegations by the Upper East Regional Minister Mark Wayongo that relief items were not forthcoming. He said at the time when the Minister was talking about shortage of relief items in Accra, there were truck loads of the items in the region. “Whilst he was in Accra and the items were already there,” he noted. Last week's flood killed one and displaced over 1,800 people. Houses and farmlands have all given way to flood waters. One of the facilities affected is the Northern Star tomato processing plant. The facility got flooded in Pwalugu despite efforts by workers to pile up bags of sand to recede the rampaging flood from entering the premises. Joy News’ Upper East Region correspondent Albert Sori reported of canoes parked at the entrance of the factory ostensibly to allow workers access to parts of the premises heavily flooded. A care taker at the factory however downplayed the effect of the flood on the facilities at the factory in an interview with Sori. The factory is not operating at an optimum level largely because of the paucity of raw materials, Sori added. The factory is one of many facilities affected by a severe rain storm in the region. Houses and farmlands have been taken over by the flood waters with one person reported dead.
