The United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has donated a $220,000 mobile health clinic van to support medical outreach efforts for Ghanaians.

The mobile clinic is equipped with an ultrasound machine and printer, an echocardiogram machine, two examination beds, three consulting rooms, air conditioners, a refrigerator for vaccines, a generator, a power system, and other essential medical tools.

The HopeXchange Medical Center in Kumasi will manage and operate the clinic, providing specialized medical screenings to communities in the Ashanti Region and beyond.

With the introduction of this mobile clinic, preventive, promotive and curative health services will be brought to the doorsteps of those who are unable to travel to Kumasi," said USAID/Ghana Health Office Director, Dr. Zohra Balsara during the mobile clinic handover event.

"The beauty of the HopeXchange model is that everyone has the right to the highest level of quality health care, embodying a true vision of equity," she added.

The HopeXchange Medical Center is a state-of-the-art healthcare facility managed by the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) that serves four million people across the country.

Since 2013, USAID has provided $3.5 million to HopeXchange to support various initiatives, including establishing and equipping the pathology laboratory for the Women's Cancer Center, supporting clinical and research programs, and constructing a maternal-child health center with a labor and delivery suite, neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, and an adolescent clinic.

The HopeXchange Medical Center also boasts a dedicated outreach team of clinicians who conduct routine visits to communities.

Between October 2023 and September 2024, the outreach team reached 12,517 people across 63 communities in the Ashanti and Bono East Regions.

The new Mobile Clinic Van will enable the outreach team to significantly expand its services to more communities.

The hospital's General Manager, Dominic Osei, expressed optimism about the impact of the van, stating that it will accelerate the hospital's efforts to improve community healthcare.

“The Outreach Team from October 2023 to September 2024 reached out to 12,517 people in 63 communities and institutions bringing quality health care to the people at their doorstep.
About twenty women identified with masses in their breasts during various outreaches received various interventions ranging from ultrasound and CT scans, and histopathological diagnoses to free surgery. They each returned home with renewed hope for life.

“The Mobile Clinic will allow the Outreach Team to reach underserved and remote communities nationwide, offering health education and medical screenings, including specialized services. It will provide essential free quality medical care to people who otherwise lack access, including children in need,” he said.

The United States is Ghana's largest bilateral development partner. In the past year, USAID has provided over $150 million to support health, economic growth and agriculture, education, governance, and security.

Approximately $30 million of this funding is dedicated to maternal and child health, nutrition and family planning.
