The Vehicle and Assets Dealers Union of Ghana (VADUG) has distanced itself from recent reports linking some car dealers in the country to the import and sale of stolen vehicles.

In a statement signed by its President General, Bernard Ntrekwah, the Union expressed concern that the issue, if left unchecked, could damage Ghana’s international image and create fear and disaffection within the second-hand automobile industry.

“As a Union, we are always in favour of best practices and ensure that our members follow the right procedures in the acquisition, transportation and disposal of vehicles,” the statement said.

VADUG stated that it has no ties with any individuals or garages found culpable of engaging in the illicit trade and pledged full cooperation with anti-graft and investigative agencies to eliminate the practice.

The Union further urged agencies responsible for oversight at the country’s ports and land borders to act with “extreme professionalism” to prevent stolen vehicles from entering Ghana.

VADUG also called for stronger inter-agency collaboration and public education on the operations of the automobile market, stressing its readiness to partner with state institutions to restore trust and order in the industry.
