Leading female athlete and hitherto one of Ghana´s Olympic medal hopeful at the on going Beijing Olympic Games, Vida Anim has opened a rather a sorry page in her relationship with the Ghana Amateur Athletics Association (GAAA).Vida threatened to sit out of the 200m women’s final in which she had qualified, explaining her threat as a result of unfulfilled obligations on the part of team officials.True to her word, Vida was missing from the line-up, leaving no doubt she had seen through her threat. She was however to explain later that it was an injury that took her out of the race.Speaking to Asempa Sports from Beijing in a phone interview, she told host Christopher Opoku, that she pulled a hamstring during a warm up minutes before the event. She insisted that only the injury knocked her out of the race and not the issues she raised concerning her allowances. However, Vida also maintained that the GAAA owed her sums to the tune of US$6000. This was the expenditure she said she incurred during the camping of Ghanaian athletes in Germany. She said, Mr. Sandy Osei Agyeman, Chairman GAAA stood surety for the money. The actual amount was US$8000, but she has since been paid US$2000.
Commenting on the denial of the Sports Ministry of any such claim, Vida Anim said she was dismayed, because Mr. Osei Agyeman had requested for the receipts, which she e-mailed to him. She added that, the original receipts have been shown to the Ghanaian officials at Beijing.Nevertheless, Vida Anim complained about the age-old problem of proper preparation towards major events. She blamed Ghana’s embarrassing performance at the Beijing Olympic Games on poor planning and threw a challenge to the authorities to put proper measures in place for athletes to see what results could be produced.Vida Anim also affirmed her determination to continue competing for the nation.Story by Jerry Mordy (Asempa FM)
