The CEO of Vodafone Ghana, Mr. Kyle Whitehill, and the management of Vodafone Ghana has brought hope to 25 children by raising funds for the completion of a twelve bedroom building for the Teshie Humanitarian Centre. The centre, which was handed over to the founder of the center, Mrs Janet Anyeley Parker last week, also has a large kitchen, five washrooms and toilets, an office, a large recreational living area and an annex which has been ear marked for a clinic with two washrooms and two toilets, a kitchenette and a living area. In addition to the fund raising activities, the project also received supporting funds from Vodafone Ghana Foundation as well as Vodafone Ghana operations to use to complete the building, Mr. Whitehill, who felt very passionately about the project, also raised funds to complete the building and has been paying the tuition/training fees of the orphans. Speaking at the official launch of the centre, Mr. Whitehill, remarked that, ‘Vodafone is passionate about giving back to the community within which it operates. We pride ourselves as being an international company with local roots and that is an indication of how connected we are to local communities, no matter where we find ourselves. It brings me joy that through my CEO privileges I have been able to oversee this project. It is a child’s right to be educated and it is a child’s right to be loved and so all I ask is that these children are given love and the best education possible; an education that focuses on good morals and values so that we can collectively bring up children that Ghana can be proud of.’ The new building will provide a home and an education to the children in a holistic manner. The centre will primarily care for the orphaned children and will focus on unleashing the talent of each child to enable them achieve their full potential. Vodafone Ghana will also cover the operational costs of the centre for the next two years. The Teshie humanitarian centre is owned by Mrs. Janet Anekey Parker and had until the intervention of Mr. Whitehill, faced severe financial constraints which hindered the completion of the new building ever since construction began in 1995 with the support of the Ghana Rotary Club. Following Mr. Whitehill’s intervention in 2011, the centre was completed in four and a half months and was officially inaugurated on August 3rd 2011. According to Mrs. Anyeley Parker, ‘I am eternally grateful for Mr. Whitehill’s intervention. The most important thing is that these children have hope. They have no excuse not to succeed and we will collectively work towards shaping the best children possible by paying attention to their individual needs and talents.’ The Teshie Humanitarian Centre is located in Suststruno, Teshie.
