Day three of the 2017 WAFU Cup of Nations in Ghana was one of snatch and grabs with four goals scored in the dying minutes across both games as Mali and Nigeria progressed to the group stages of the tournament after winning their respective Last 16 matches.
It was another day of stunning goal mouth action on Monday, September 11 at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium with six goals scored as the Eagles and Super Eagles soared after Mali beat Mauritania 3-1 and Nigeria beat Sierra Leone 2-0.
While the scorelines of both games read convincingly for the winners, that was not the case with both countries scoring goals in final moments of their match to steal the limelight.
The first game saw Mali take the lead thanks to a strike from Mandala Konte, but that was soon canceled out by Mauritania’s Samba Cheikh.
The game looked to be heading towards a stalemate and a dreaded penalty shoot-out, but two goals from Moussa Kone in the 88th and 91st minutes handed them the win.
The second game was very similar and also looked to be heading for a draw, but again late goals from Moses Okoro and Moses Peter, scored in the 85th and 87th minute respectively, saw Nigeria walk away victorious.
Day four of the WAFU Cup of Nations will produce another double-header at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium with Cote d’Ivoire taking on Togo at 15h00 (GMT) and Benin up against Cape Verde at 18h00 (GMT) on Tuesday, September 12.
