Garu MP and Former Medical Director at Ridge Hospital, Dr Thomas Anaba, has called for stronger protection for the Special Prosecutor and his office, emphasising the growing threats against anti-corruption efforts in Ghana.
His remarks follow concerns raised by the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, about threats to his life and the safety of his staff.
Dr Anaba believes the Special Prosecutor's revelations highlight a larger issue—corruption is deeply entrenched within the country’s political and economic system, and those benefiting from it will resist accountability.
"Look at what he has said—it seems like the leadership of the country sets up anti-corruption agencies as a smokescreen while they continue their corrupt activities behind the scenes.
"It is a new office, and it is evolving, but now that the Special Prosecutor has spoken out about how he and his staff are suffering, with even his life in danger, we must take a second look at how to protect anyone who occupies that office," he urged.
The lawmaker echoed IMANI Africa’s Kofi Bentil, emphasising that corruption is often fueled by politically connected individuals who influence security forces, the media, and even government institutions.
This, he argued, makes it difficult for the OSP to function independently and effectively.

To address this, Dr Anaba proposed ensuring the full independence of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) by preventing cases handled by the Special Prosecutor from being transferred to the Attorney General for prosecution, as such a process creates room for political interference.
Additionally, he suggested providing adequate security for the Special Prosecutor by ensuring that the government offers the same level of protection given to high-profile officials like the Electoral Commissioner, who currently has military personnel stationed at her residence.
