Youth in Weija in the Ga South Municipal Assembly on Friday blocked the road leading to a landfill site in the area in protest at what they say are unfulfilled promises by the government.
The irate youth cautioned that until government fulfills its promise to construct the Weija road and provide health care facilities; they will continue to prevent the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and Zoomlion Ghana Limited, from using the Weija landfill site.
Spokesperson for the youth, M.C. Kwame said on Adom Fm’s Dwaso Nsem on Friday that, their decision is to demonstrate their anger at the government for not fulfilling the promises it made to them.
He said the liquid waste from the landfill site runs into their homes thereby causing serious health challenges to them, especially now that there cholera is spreading fast in the region.
The Director of Waste Management at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Mr. Blay Addison confirmed the blockade of the road by the youth to Adom FM.
The Accra Area Manager of Zoomlion, Robert Coleman-Tetteh explained that the landfill site had been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and appealed to the youth to allow the officials to do their work.
