In a powerful celebration of innovation, excellence, and youth empowerment, the West African Youth Council has announced the nomination of candidates for the Nelson Mandela Leadership Award of Excellence and Integrity—a prestigious honour bestowed on fewer than 20 exceptional individuals across Africa each year. This year’s edition placed a spotlight on younger professionals making transformative impacts within their fields.
The award, named after global icon Nelson Mandela, recognises individuals whose work reflects excellence, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to excellent innovation, youth development, and social progress. It is not a general leadership commendation but a field-specific acknowledgment of those using their technical expertise to influence the future of Africa.
Among the esteemed past recipients are notable figures such as Mr. Temitope Adeusi, the MD/CEO of the Nigeria construction firm, Santhotad Concept Plus; Barr. Ibrahim Aisata, a renowned lawyer from Mali; Engr. Aliyu Oladimeji, Chief Technical Officer of Nigeria’s TechParlons; Dr. Bamidele Ajanaku, CEO of Cotter and Knuckle Engineering; the young AI innovator, Mr. Adeyinka Ogunbajo; Dr. Oluwadamilola Adediran, a fintech expert and senior manager at Global Zone Networks; Arch. Francis Chidozie from Benin Republic; and Ghana’s own Engr. Christian Adofo, a leading environmental science researcher.
Each awardee is selected through a rigorous and competitive process that assesses not only their professional achievements but also their societal impact and potential to drive Africa’s development forward. With a growing focus on young changemakers, the 2024 selection highlighted leaders who are leveraging technology, research, and community engagement to address real-world challenges.
The Nelson Mandela Leadership Award reaffirms the importance of recognizing and encouraging African talent that is committed to building a better future for the continent. It stands as a call to action for youth across Africa to innovate, lead, and uplift their communities with excellence and integrity—core values that Mandela himself embodied.
