President Akufo-Addo says his government has made significant improvements to the country’s judicial sector since he assumed office in 2017.
Speaking at the Public Sector Lawyers Conference in Accra on Tuesday, November 5, the President emphasised that progress has been made in various areas, including employment and service provision.
He noted, “Indeed, since 2017, we have made significant strides in strengthening the service. We have recruited 119 State Attorneys, including 70 others whose appointments will soon be formalised. This recruitment represents almost half of the lawyers currently in the Office of the Attorney General.”
The President added, “Our efforts have also extended to legal departments across state-owned institutions, where the staff strength has more than doubled. Today, approximately 600 public lawyers are ready to serve.”
He also revealed that these public lawyers have received additional support from the government in the form of scholarships for advanced studies.
Regarding the country’s arbitration cases, the President highlighted that, unlike in the past, Ghana now has competent lawyers who represent the nation in international courts for arbitration disputes, attributing this achievement to his government’s dedication and hard work.
As part of efforts to further expand the sector, the Attorney General (AG), Justice Godfred Yeboah Dame, who also spoke at the event, promised to build new, modern Attorney General’s offices in various regions across the country in the next NPP government.
He also noted that, over the past four years, Ghana has never lost an arbitration case, saving the country approximately $90 billion.
