The World Food Programme is set to partner government to expand the national school feeding to cover about 100,000 children. The partnership is to ensure that locally produced nutritious foods are used to feed the children. An additional 115,000 people will be reached through nutritional safety nets and supplement to government cash transfers. The WFP is investing $3.4 million in these new programmes.Already WFP assistance to the Ghana School Feeding Programme reaches some 41,000 school children in northern Ghana. The programme is also supporting the Ghana Health Service in a nutritional safety net programme for 60,000 pregnant/nursing women and young children each year, for the period of 2006 – 2010.
It is also working with NADMO and other agencies to provide food assistance for 185,000 vulnerable persons affected by last year's droughts/floods in northern Ghana. In line with the policy shift to buy food commodities in the country, WFP Ghana has locally procured $4 million worth of food commodities for its programmes since the beginning of this year. These measures are in respect of the current global food crisis that has hit many parts of the world. In the Horn of Africa, where the effects of drought and insecurity have been compounded by high prices, WFP is amping up assistance by providing $110 million which includes funds from its emergency reserves, to meet urgent food needs including supplementary feeding programmes for malnourished children.
