The Ashanti Region has been hit with yet another child trafficking story as five people, including a male, are in the grips of Nkawie police for allegedly trafficking a three-month old baby.
The confession by Afua Pokua, 28, a seamstress and mother of the child, led to the arrest of the other four accomplices.
It comes less than two weeks after three people including proprietor of a maternity home were picked up for similar offence.
The four accomplices are Faustina Adu-Bobi, and Matilda Adu-Bobi aged 36 and 28 respectively; 33 year old Adwoa Kwabea and the only male, Bernard Andoh, who is 26.
Police say mother of the baby, who used to attend antenatal at a Maternity Home at Sepaase, near Nkawie stopped visiting the home seven months into her pregnancy.
A friend whom Pokua had told she lost her baby later picked rumours suggesting a mid-wife had sold Pokua’s baby, a rumour which turned out to be false.
Pokua later apologized to the midwife after Pokua’s friend confronted her [midwife] over the issue.
At the meeting to clear the issues about the mysterious disappearance of the baby, the mother confessed to selling her for 2,000 Ghana cedis.
They were arrested by the Abuakwa Police who later handed the suspects over to their Nkawie counterparts.
Nkawie Divisional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit Coordinator, ASP Elizabeth Boateng, told Nhyira News police investigations led to the arrest of Bernard a businessman and Adwoa Kwabea.
According to her, police were still investigating reports of money exchanging hands in the trafficking of the baby girl who is currently being housed at the Kumasi Children's Home.
Though she will not give details about how much financial gains the mother of the baby, Afua Pokua gained from the business, Nhyira News sources say she received two thousand Ghana cedis from the dubious deal.
Meanwhile, the Nkawie District Court remanded the suspects into custody to re-appear on Tuesday.
