Police at Essikado in the Western region are heading to court today for an order for psychiatric evaluation of a 40-year-old woman who poisoned her two daughters.
The suspect, Naana Amenana, believed to be mentally unstable, is said to have fed her children, a seven and six-year-old, with tea containing a substance believed to be poison.
The children are said to have died in their sleep.
The bodies of the children have since been deposited at the Efia Nkwanta Regional hospital.
The woman, who has been in police custody after the incident, has refused to speak about the incident.
Naana Amenana’s family members who are yet to get over the shock are attributing her actions to her mental condition.
According to a sister of the suspect, Nana Esiaa, the children who were with her the day before the unfortunate incident had told her their mother was treating them well.
“She takes really good care of her children, she hardly does anything that shows she is mentally unstable,” Nana Esiaa told JoyNews.
Meanwhile, the Essikado Police have begun investigations into the incident and are hoping a psychiatric evaluation will help to unravel the circumstances surrounding the children’s death.
“We saw something in a bottle suspected to be a poisonous substance at the scene but we are yet to confirm,” Sekondi District Commander, DSP Daniel Annan Amoah stated.
