Defence of constitutional rights must be consistent and not selective, Senior Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawah Mogtari has cautioned.
This is in a direct response to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s call for fairness in the arrest and detention of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi.
In a statement posted on X on Thursday, 29 May, Joyce Bawah acknowledged Dr Bawumia’s concern, stating, “Thank you for your statement on the reported arrest and detention of Mr Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.”
She added, “Like you, I believe firmly in the rule of law, constitutionalism, and the fundamental rights of every Ghanaian.”

However, she pointedly noted the irony in Bawumia’s sudden alarm over due process, stating, “I find it somewhat ironic that concerns about due process and arbitrary power are being raised now, especially when many Ghanaians... have felt the heavy hand of state institutions acting without transparency or fairness.”

While expressing support for Mr Wontumi’s rights to be respected, Madam Bawah called for consistency.
“Justice must not only be demanded when it affects our own. It must be upheld for all Ghanaians regardless of party colours or affiliations,” she stated.
She urged that this moment “serve as a turning point... for a renewed commitment to uphold the dignity, rights, and liberties of every citizen.”
