Ghana’s preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a significant dent Saturday dawn when the Black Stars were beaten 2-0 by a clinical Mexican side at a packed Estadio Cuauhtémoc.

In a high-intensity international friendly played in the high-altitude city of Puebla, the Black Stars were punished for a slow start in the opening minutes and a costly lack of precision in front of goal during a frantic second-half performance.

The technical team’s tactical plans were disrupted almost immediately after kickoff.

With just two minutes on the clock, Mexican midfielder Brian Gutiérrez found space outside the penalty area and unleashed a powerful, low right-footed drive into the bottom right corner, leaving Ghana goalkeeper Benjamin Asare completely beaten.

Stung by the early goal, Ghana struggled to settle into their passing rhythm. Defender Oscar Oppong was shown an early yellow card in the 13th minute for a reckless challenge on El Tri prodigy Gilberto Mora, who proved to be a constant menace.

Mexico nearly doubled their lead in the 21st minute when Mora’s right-footed strike rattled the right post. The rebound fell to Armando González, but Asare reacted superbly to save the close-range effort, keeping Ghana in the match as the first half ended 1-0 on the scoreboard.

The Black Stars emerged for the second half with renewed vigour, orchestrating a dominant 10-minute spell that should have yielded an equaliser.

Striker Felix Afena-Gyan forced two consecutive world-class saves from newly introduced Mexican goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo in the 52nd and 53rd minutes, firing dangerous right-footed efforts from the right side of the box.

Seconds later, winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi agonisingly struck the crossbar with a curling left-footed shot from outside the box after picking up a pass from Ibrahim Osman following a corner.

Having failed to convert their best chances, Ghana suffered the ultimate football punishment just a minute later. In the 54th minute, Mexico initiated a devastatingly swift counter-attack. Luis Romo drove forward before picking out second-half substitute Guillermo Martínez, who sublimely guided a left-footed shot into the top left corner to make it 2-0.

With the game slipping away and physical fatigue setting in due to the altitude, Ghana’s bench executed a sweeping series of changes. Razak Simpson, Prince Amoako, and Jerry Afriyie were introduced in place of Rak-Sakyi, Daniel Agyei, and Afena-Gyan.

Goalkeeper Solomon Agbasi also replaced Benjamin Asare in the 76th minute, while midfield reinforcements Salim Adams and Aziz Issah were thrown into the fray.

The Black Stars fought until the final whistle, with late substitute Jerry Afriyie seeing a goal-bound header blocked in the 94th minute after a cross from Ebenezer Adade. Salim Adams also forced a diving save from Acevedo in stoppage time with a fierce long-range drive.

However, the North Americans held firm to secure the clean sheet, leaving Ghana with crucial defensive and clinical lessons to learn before the global showpiece kicks off.
