Former Chief Executive of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital is warning of dire consequences if government abrogates the existing maintenance contract for the Accident and Emergency Centre.
Some officials have blamed the break-down of equipment at the Intensive Care Unit on the maintenance agreement which does not allow local technicians to touch the machines.
It follows Nhyira FM’s Ohemeng Tawiah’s investigations which revealed life-support equipment at the unit had broken down resulting in the loss of six lives.
Doctors have warned they will withdraw their services until management acts to restore all broken down ventilators. Management blames German Gertech Company for the delay in fixing the faulty equipment, and there are calls for the maintenance contract to be abrogated.
However, former CEO, Dr. Anthony Nsiah-Asare, sees nothing wrong with the deal. He says the agreement signed by the Ministries of Health and Finance and the German company is to ensure effective functioning of the Accident and Emergency Centre.
Dr. Nsiah Asare who played a key role in the establishment of the unit rather believes the facility is being poorly managed.
“You don’t abolish contract just like that; if you want to touch the contract, you go to court”.
Dr. Nsiah-Asare blames strained relationship between the contractors and the hospital management for current state of affairs.
“I think KATH management has lost it; so my advice is that, the Ministry of Health and Komfo Anokye management and the contractor should sit down together and come out with ways of managing this contract so that things would be done in time and promptly.”
Meanwhile, officials of Gertech Technology say they honour invitation for discussion on developments at the Komfo Anokye Hospital. Its Country Representative, John Mlaeinic, will however not respond to specific questions on the contract except to say Gertech is concerned about developments at the hospital.
We will appreciate this initiative. We will support it. Of course, we are interested. None of us is hiding anything and we believe that if there is room to improve, it should be done sooner”, Mr. Mlaeinic said.
