Ten Judicial Officers are participating in an 8-day Court Managers Training Programme from in Canada July 23 - 30, 2011, to study best practices in Canadian court administration. The programme is under the Ghana-Canada Judicial Cooperation Project with the Federal Judicial Affairs, Canada. As part of the training programme, participants will visit courts and government departments in Toronto and Ottawa, Canada. A statement by the Judicial Secretary, signed by Director of Communications, Mrs. Grace A. Tagoe, said it upon completion of the study tour, the officers will be expected, among others, to have gained knowledge and understanding of the organization and functioning of the Canadian judicial system with emphasis on key court administration institutions and functions and also acquaint themselves with specific activities and/or procedures of certain Canadian court administration institutions particularly as they relate to client service and communication; court administration management skills and competences; and records management. The statement further explained that the programme, which is being funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) falls under the Judicial Systems Improvement for Commerce and Economy (JUSTICE) Project. The goal of the project is to contribute to sustainable economic and private sector development in the countries of Ghana, Jamaica and Peru by strengthening the legal and judicial enabling environment. Specifically, the Project will contribute to private sector development by assisting in strengthening the skills of judges and the capacities of the courts and court staff to efficiently and fairly process and determine cases connected to commercial, private sector development and business matters and attentive to Ghanaian economic structures. JUSTICE will focus specifically on the judicial education, training and skills development of judges and court personnel and the development of court administration capacities in order to contribute to improvements in the functioning of the courts and the strengthening of the court system.
