Eleven foreigners apprehended for allegedly running a counterfeit US dollar printing operation at Tuba in the Ga South Municipality are now facing prosecution, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has confirmed.
The suspects were detained on 5 January 2026 by the Anti-Human Trafficking and Cyber Fraud Taskforce Unit under the Weija Sector Command, following claims that they were producing fake US currency.
Authorities seized various items during the raid, including bundles of counterfeit notes, photocopiers, laptops, and a router thought to have been used in the illicit operation.
Speaking to Channel One News at a workshop on human smuggling and trafficking, Weija Sector Commander Chief Superintendent Richard Coffie said investigations into the case have been concluded, with all eleven individuals currently undergoing trial.
He also revealed that between January and March 2026, the command rescued 42 additional foreign nationals allegedly trafficked into the country for cyber fraud activities.
The successful operations, he noted, were a result of sustained intelligence-led efforts.
Chief Superintendent Coffie added that plans are underway to establish a specialised unit to enhance monitoring and crack down on human smuggling and trafficking networks.
“Earlier this year, a major arrest led to the detention of 11 foreign nationals involved in producing counterfeit currency. These individuals were brought into the country illegally and engaged in the printing of fake money,” he said.
He concluded by emphasising that the suspects would be prosecuted in accordance with both Ghanaian and international law.
