As part of activities to mark the 13th anniversary of the soccer tragedy that claimed 126 lives in 2001, former football administrator, Herbert Mensah will lead a walk to raise funds for families of victims of that tragedy.

The walk scheduled to take place in Kumasi on Friday is also expected to draw attention to the effects of soccer violence and take a strong stand against the phenomenon.

Herbert Mensah who was board chairman of Asante Kotoko during the period told Joy News successive governments have done very little to show concern and compassion to dependants of those who died during the disaster at the Accra Sports Stadium.

A soccer match will be played between old players of the senior national team, the black stars and the media in Kumasi at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Meanwhile the Ministry of Youth and Sports has also outlined two activities to mark the 13th anniversary of the disaster.

The first is a health talk aimed at highlighting the dangers of hooliganism.

According to Michael Frimpong, a spokesperson for the Ministry, a wreath-laying ceremony will also be held by government, officials of Accra Hearts of Oak, Kumasi Asante Kotoko and families of victims of the disaster.

The Wednesday May 9, 2001 occurred during a match between Ghana's two most successful football teams, Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club and Asante Kotoko.

Trouble had been anticipated, and extra security measures had been taken.

The home side scored two late goals to defeat Kotoko 2–1 which led to disappointed Kotoko fans throwing plastic seats and bottles onto the pitch.

The response to this crowd disturbance from the police was to fire tear gas into the crowd.

Panic ensued and a resulting stampede led to the deaths from compressive asphyxia of 126 people.
