The leader of the Movement for Change, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has mounted a strong defence for the flagship One District One Factory (1D1F) programme that was under his outfit when he was Trade Minister.
Speaking on Joy FM's Newsfile on Saturday, Mr Kyerematen described the programme as an innovative and revolutionary project which could change the trajectory of the country's economy.
He further highlighted its significance not only for Ghana but for the entire African continent.
According to him, despite its apparent lack of local recognition, it was a project that had international acclaim.
He recounted international trips with President Akufo-Addo, where leaders from other countries praised the project as a groundbreaking endeavour in industrial development.
"1D1F is the most revolutionary innovative and comprehensive programme of industrial transformation not only in Ghana but in Africa.
"When I used to travel around with President Akufo-Addo, in countries that understand what development is, the first thing they tell President Akufo-Addo is that you have a great project in that 1D1F project. Everywhere we go, so we’re not celebrated in our own country," he said on Saturday.
Responding to why despite the implementation of 1D1F, there is still a low level of local production juxtaposed with high imports, Mr Kyerematen attributed part of the issue to what he described as biased and negative media coverage.
Choosing his "words carefully", he criticised the media for often providing insufficient content and biased commentary on 1D1F, stating, "Sometimes a report on 1D1F is so biased. They go around shooting images of 1D1F companies and they do not provide enough content for people to evaluate what they are showing, and it is all negative commentary that doesn’t help."
The leader of the Movement for Change urged the media to adopt a more balanced and constructive approach in their report on the 1D1F initiative, emphasising the importance of showcasing the positive impact and potential of the program to the public.
