About 250 supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Sakora Wonoo in the Kwabre East Constituency of the Ashanti Region have defected to the ruling NDC. Their decision is informed by what they say are the positive development projects being undertaken by the current government. Sakora Wonno is about 10 kilometers from the District capital, Mamponteng. In fact, it is the hometown of NPP General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie popularly called ‘Sir John’. The defectors say though they are not card-bearing members of the opposition party, they are well-known sympathizers. They accused the NPP of neglecting the community in its eight years at the helm of the country’s affairs. A special ceremony, attended by NDC executives and the Kwabre District Chief Executive was organized to welcome the group, amid drumming and dancing. Spokesperson for the group, Kwabena Frimpong, said the town saw little improvement under the NPP. He stated that the Antoa-Krobo-Wonoo road which is the only legacy of the NPP in the community, developed pot-holes six months after its construction. Mr. Frimpong told Nhyira News the town has had its share of the better Ghana agenda plan of the NDC. "From 2000 to 2008, we didn’t see any improvement in our community. Even the General Secretary of NPP is from Sakora Wonoo but we the youth of NPP in this town we want to make a change, move to the NDC’ because since the NDC came to power from 2008 up to this time, there have been some changes that we’ve seen in this town’’ he said. He chastised the opposition NPP for doing little to improve lives in the community, though it remained its stronghold. ‘‘What can we show as NPP’s achievement at Wonoo, apart from the Antoa-Krobo-Wonoo road which never lasted for six months’’, he asked. ‘‘I can tell you for a fact that, pupils in the two basic schools have all received free school uniforms whilst some of the youth here are also enjoying the National Youth Employment Programme under the NDC’’. District Chief Executive for Kwabre, Adams Iddisah, assured them that the NDC will continue to deliver on its social-democratic ideals to meet the aspirations of ordinary Ghanaians.
