The School Feeding Programme is to expanded to feed about five hundred and Sixty thousand school children in about thousand five hundred fifty six schools in the country by the close of the year. The figure is a target set by the Programme secretariat for this year, a leap from last year’s target of three hundred and twenty thousand school children in about eight hundred eighty nine schools. The National Coordinator of the Programme, Mr. Michael Kenneth Nsowaah, stated this in an interview with Ekourba Gyasi on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Thursday. He said it is his desire to see to it that the programme achieves its target of feeding about a million and forty thousand School children across the country after its pilot phase ends in 2010. He also promised to ensure that the programme succeeds and that he will not countenance any act of malfeasance in any quarters. Mr. Nsowaah said the programme will soon get budgetary support from the Ministry of Local Government to help expand its operations. The former Acting Director-General of the Ghana Education Service took over from Dr Amoako Tuffour who was removed from office following allegations of corruption and mismanagement of the programme. The GSFP is an internationally- and locally-funded program which provides children in public primary schools and kindergartens in the poorest areas of Ghana with one meal day, using locally-grown foodstuffs.
