Two armed robbers last Friday evening engaged the Swedru Police Patrol team in a shootout after they had robbed a man of his belongings and a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado at the Guardian Hotel in Agona Swedru.
The victim, Mr Jonathan Akuamoah, the Executive Director of United Way Ghana, a non-governmental organisation, had visited the Salvation Army Hospital at Agona Duakwa together with some partners to undertake a project at the health facility.
However, the meeting ran late into the evening so he decided to pass the night at the Guardian Hotel so that he could continue the journey to Accra the next morning.
According to the Swedru District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Anthony Ekow Yawson, who confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic on Saturday, as Mr Akuamoah was about to enter the hotel, he saw that one of the robbers had attacked the security and tied him up. Then the other robber approached him and asked him to surrender all his belongings else he would shoot him.
He stated that sensing danger, Mr Akuamoah complied and gave out GHc3, 000, two mobile phones, a wedding ring and the keys to the vehicle. The robbers drove off after that.
DSP Yawson said that his outfit received information to the effect that around 10:40 p.m., armed robbers had attacked a man at gunpoint and robbed him of his Toyota Land Cruiser Prado with registration number GR754 W, which was donated to the nongovernmental organisation by NEWMONT Ghana-Limited.
According to DSP Yawson, the patrol team was alerted about the robbery.
As the vehicle was moving from Winneba towards Accra, they signaled the occupants to stop but they refused.
The patrol team then decided to chase the robbers in an attempt to arrest them and retrieve the stolen vehicle.
He noted that the robbers, sensing danger, started firing at the police who were chasing them. The police also returned fire until they got to a section of the Awutu Beraku road when the robbers who were driving side by side the police patrol vehicle attempted to hit the police vehicle. It veered off the road into a ditch, causing severe damage to the door at the passenger side of the vehicle.
He indicated that at that point, the robbers sped off but the police trailed them only to find the vehicle abandoned in the middle of the road.
A search through the vehicle revealed blood stains which might be as a result of injuries sustained by the robbers in the course of the shoot-out, damage to the windscreens and both front windows, as well as a locally manufactured double barreled gun.
He, therefore, made a passionate appeal to the general public living in and around Awutu Beraku and Kasoa to volunteer information about people who would visit some health facilities with gunshot wounds for them to be apprehended.
Meanwhile, investigations are still ongoing.
