The Sunyani Police have arrested a hit-and-run driver, Onyina Gyawu, for allegedly killing an 11-year-old pupil of the Saint Joseph Catholic Primary School at Atronie, a village near Sunyani, on Tuesday, January 22, 2013.
The incident occurred in the afternoon when the boy was returning from school with his mates.
The Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Teddy Damptey Brown, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on Wednesday that Kwame Owusu of Atronie who witnessed the incident rushed to a police barrier in the area to inform the policemen on duty about the incident.
Acting on that information, the police stopped the Opel Wagon driven by Gyawu when it got to the barrier and arrested him.
ASP Brown said Gyawu told the police that he had refused to stop after the incident for fear of being lynched by the residents and that he was on his way to report the incident to the police in Sunyani.
He said Gyawu was assisting the police in their investigations, while the corpse had been deposited at the Sunyani Government Hospital pending autopsy.
