The Minister for Water Resources, Works and Housing, Alhaji Boniface Saddique Alhassan says he is awaiting a formal complaint from managers of the Weija Dam to take a decisive action to stop encroachment on the dam site. The dam supplies potable water to over two million people in Accra and is said to be under a serious threat of spilling that could destroy lives and property because of illegal activities by
developers and stone winners.Encroachment on the dam area has taken a different dimension in recent times as land developers and stone quarrying activities involving the use of explosives to detonate the rocks that serve as protection to the dam have become rampant. The Plant Manager, Michael Amoakwa, says apart from the threat to the dam, the extent of damage, if not checked could spread and submerge areas such as Odorkor and Dansoman which are about 10 to 15 kilometres away from the dam, should the run-over occur.Briefing the press on the situation on Monday during a tour, Mr Michael Amoakwa, Plant Manager at the Weija Water Treatment Plant explained that the explosives, besides breaking the mountains, also weakened the foundational structure of the dam.He said people have defied several warnings not to build or carry out any form of human activity within the catchment zone despite the fact that they were aware that the land was the property of the Ghana Water Company which belonged to the government.Mr Amoakwa said because the stone quarrying had now reached close to the banks of the dam, a lot of foreign materials have entered it, which made it difficult to determine the level and volume of water in the dam.But Alhaji Saddique says as soon he is officially briefed, action will be taken to rectify the situation and to forestall any worsening of Accra’s water difficulties. He spoke to Joy FM’s Supper Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, and explained that he had also notified the Ghana Water Company to immediately take action on the situation.
