The Police in Kumasi yesterday re-captured a suspected armed robber, Eric Alfred Zimie, after a shooting incident at Fufuo in the Atwima District, where he had been taken as part of investigations.Sources said when they got to the place, Zimie removed the handcuffs and ran into a marshy area but he was shot in the left thigh and re-arrested.The 25-year-old suspect was first arrested at his base at the Bantama Race Course two weeks ago far committing a number of daylight robberies in the Kumasi metropolis and the Brong Ahafo and Western regions.Briefing the media on the incident, the Ashanti Regional Police Crime Officer, ACP Bright Oduro, said around 4 a.m. Wednesday, the police took the suspect, who was thought to have been well secured with the handcuffs, to Suame, Tafo and Barekese as part of their enquiries. He said at Fufuo, the suspect told the police that the car could not travel to where he was taking them and asked that they should travel the distance left on foot.Mr Oduro said it was when they got out of the vehicle that the suspect suddenly broke loose the handcuffs and dashed to the marshy area in an attempt to escape. He said the police pursued him and succeeded in recapturing him after shooting his left thigh.Explaining how Zimie succeeded in breaking the well secured handcuffs, Mr Oduro said he severed the handcuffs while he was in cells and tightened it with a rope to deceive the police that it was well secured. He said it was when the suspect was recaptured that the police got to know that the handcuffs had earlier been tampered with.He said Zimie was on admission at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and responding to treatment.Source: Daily Graphic
