Mr Clement Dandori, Shama-Ahanta East Metropolitan Coordinating Director, on Saturday called on residents of the metropolis to adopt good environmental practices to cut down the huge expenditure on waste management.
He made the call when launching a public education on sanitation organized by Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a private waste collection company at Takoradi.
Mr Dandori said the Metropolitan Assembly spent around 30 billion cedis over the past two years on waste management and this means about 100 million cedis a day.
He said the assembly could effectively manage waste at a minimal cost with the support and cooperation of the public.
Mr Dandori commended Zoomlion Ghana Limited for coming up with the campaign, as this would compliment the assembly's effort of ensuring high environmental and sanitary standards, particularly during the Ghana 2008 tournament.
He urged the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport unions to take up the challenge and help educate the travelling public to keep the environment clean.
Mr Dandori advised the drivers to have litterbins in their vehicles and ensure that passengers use it instead of littering the environment indiscriminately.Later, Mr Felix Boankrah, Western Regional Operational Supervisor of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, presented 50 refuse bins to the Regional GPRTU for distribution to lorry parks.
In a speech, he said the campaign is targeted mainly at the lorry parks because of the large travelling public.
Mr Boankrah said drivers who allow passengers to litter the environment indiscriminately would be held responsible.
He said Zoomlion is assisting to keep the environment clean especially before, during and after Ghana 2008.
Mr Isaac Essau, Regional Chairman of GPRTU who received the refuse bins assured that the bins would be used for the intended purpose and that the union would fully support the campaign.Source: GNA
