Mr Joe D. Issaka, Head of the Civil Service, on Wednesday called on Civil Servants in the three Northern Regions to change their attitude towards work and put up their best to boost development in the area. He said the 250 billion cedis allocated to the regions by the government "should urge you to play a leading role to ensure that the money yields good results for the area to put it in a good position to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015", he said. Mr Issaka who was speaking to Heads of Departments drawn from Upper East Region, in Bolgatanga, noted that Civil and Public Servants play a major role in the development of the country. He said it was a shame that the region was referred to as the poorest in the country and urged Civil and Public Servants to work harder. "If the people of this region are to get out of their poverty, then much would depends on you playing your roles very well", he said. He asked the workers to be punctual, active and smart in their work and urged the Heads of Departments to be devoted to their responsibilities through good supervision. He said constraints like poor salaries, miserable conditions of service and the lack of training to upgrade skills of workers would soon be a thing of the past, as Government was restructuring the Civil Service to improve it and make it efficient. Mr Issaka said salary structures would undergo a reform to put workers of equal qualification at the same level, while workers would be trained to upgrade their skills. "If we all respond positively and change our attitude towards work, then the Government would have no excuse, but to pay us as we deserve", he said. Mr Samuel N'Lary, Upper East Regional Coordinating Director, lauded the system of mandatory training for every civil servant, saying it would eventually make the service more productive. Source: GNA
