At least seven people have been injured in a stampede after fans stormed a stadium gate to get a glimpse of David Beckham at a Chinese university.
Three police officers, two university security guards and two students were injured, Shanghai police said.
The state-run Xinmin Net news site said nearly 1,000 fans had gathered at the university stadium, where the retired footballer was scheduled to meet the university's football team. Xinmin said the event was cancelled after the stampede.
Upon Beckham's arrival, fans stormed a gate and broke through police and guards, the news site said. Photos and video footage show people pushed to the ground, shoes scattered and a uniformed woman being carried away, her face covered in blood.
"Too crazy," said Chu Dan, a Tongji University football player who was hoping to have "some interaction on the pitch" with the former England footballer. "But we didn't expect so many people showing up here – too many fans of Beckham."
Shanghai police said they were investigating the incident
A post on Beckham's account on Sina Weibo, the Chinese-language microblogging site, wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The footballer is in China on a seven-day promotional tour for the Super League. He has been hired as an image ambassador to promote the sport.
