La, a football loving suburb of Accra came to a virtual standstill as Ghana's novel education/recreation soccer tour made the much anticipated event stop at the La Traditional Courtyard park.
Following the week one opening in Nima on the 1st of June, Books and Boots stormed La for the week 2 activation.
Parading the youngest player Prince Allotey aged nine, and youngest coach James Tetteh aged 17, Red Lions FC showed intellectual zeal during the reading sessions under canopies and then followed up with raw brilliance on the pitch.
Cheered on by a massive crowd, each team had a unique style of play that won the hearts of local fans from all over the La Township, but it was ultimately the dazzling Red Lions team exhibiting a brand of azonto football that saw them overcome each opponent to lift the champions trophy via a penalty shootout over Court All Stars FC.
The day started with reading sessions as each of the eight teams were grouped into classes and supervised by reading coaches led by Mariam Aminu and Sally Green. The other groups were handled by Suneetha Musah, Nii Laaye Bonne and Frederick Peprah.
The event saw high level delegation of elders from the La Traditional Council led by the Chief Priest who presented a signed jersey from Chelsea's Brazilian star Ramires to the best player of the tournament, eleven year old Francis Obi.
The Books and Boots tour is an Oxigen creation driving the corporate social responsibility vehicle in socially challenged communities. It is held every every two weeks with education and recreation as the joint springboards.
