Arsenal could be set to launch a sensational swoop for Borussia Dortmund forward Robert Lewandowski and ditch their interest in the stalling Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain. The Gunners have reportedly offered Real a club record fee of over £20 million for Higuain, who was believed to have already agreed personal terms with Arsenal that would make him one of the club's highest earners on a weekly wage of £130,000. Arsenal face competition for Higuain from Juventus, who are still hoping their recent acquisition of fellow Argentina international Carlos Tevez may swing the balance in their favour. However, with Madrid having appointed a new manager in Carlo Ancelotti, Higuain is now stalling on his decision to leave Spain and Arsenal are believed to be lining up potential alternatives to a player they had hoped would become their marquee summer signing. The north London side are understood to be in a strong position from which to launch a bid for Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski, who looks certain to leave the German club during this transfer window. It had been reported that Manchester City are also in pursuit of the player, but SportsDirect News understands that the relationship between Dortmund and Arsenal – who met in last season's Champions League group stage - may swing the balance of a Lewandowski chase in the north London club's favour. Arsenal will be hopeful too, that goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny may be able to convince his fellow Polish international to sign up with the Gunners. Lewandowski's contract with Dortmund expires at the end of next season and Arsenal would be confident of securing a discount on the player's asking price and agreeing a fee in the region of £25m. Dortmund are resigned to losing their leading scorer of last season but are determined to avoid him falling into the hands of Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich and are therefore expected to favour a bid from abroad.
