Staff and visitors at the Cocoa Affairs Court in Accra say the colonial building is fast aging and has become a potential disaster.According to Joy News’ Joseph Opoku-Gakpo the electrical wiring on some of the four detached structures housing the Circuit and High courts in the building complex are falling off and cobwebs have filled the ceilings. The dilapidated court building also consists of offices of the Judicial Services. Some of the Judicial Service staff fear the wooden structure, which has a brick foundation as its base, could collapse anytime if steps are not taken to improve the dilapidation.Parts of the building complex have been cordoned off because they have become too weak to work in.Some lawyers who spoke to Opoku-Gakpo also said recording of proceedings at the court is done manually because there are no modern recording equipment to facilitate the judicial process. The lawyers said the courtroom is always hot because there is no good ventilation or air-condition systems. The Cocoa Affairs court is well known for its ruling on the land mark ex-refinery differentials on petroleum products tax case, in which it declared that it was illegal for the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to charge such a tax.The Court then directed the NPA to pay an estimated accrued amount of GH¢661 million surplus into the Consolidated Fund.Although work has began on the construction of a new court building, it appears very little is being done to avert a potential catastrophe at the court.
