The Awutu-Effutu-Senya district Office of the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) says most of the cases they received between January and October 2007 were that of fathers neglecting their children.
The District Director of the Commission, Mr Richmond Mensah, told the Ghana News Agency at Winneba on Thursday, that within the period, his office received a total of 24 cases of non-maintenance of children by their fathers.
The Director said it was an offence to "give birth to a child and fail to cater for him or her" and advised fathers who have failed to maintain their children to change their minds to avoid facing the law.
He most of the increasing number of children either engaged in child labour or roaming the beaches in the area instead of being in school were due to neglect by their fathers.
Mr Mensah appealed to parents, especially fathers, not to shirk their responsibilities of educating their children because of poverty.
The District Director urged parents to take advantage of the Capitation grant and the school feeding programmes to enroll their children in school.
He said other cases recorded by his office include that of disputes over inheritance of properties, problems of Lands Title and child trafficking.
