The kid-glove, wrist-slapping of the disdainful Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with a two-year membership suspension from the party will shortly come to haunt the NPP, unless the suspension is promptly followed by outright dismissal. That the suspended former shady coordinator of the Ghana@50 Anniversary Celebrations would cavalierly describe his being sanctioned as a "tragic comic performance" of Greco-Roman theatrical proportions, speaks more than amply to the fact that Tarzan - as he is popularly known - has clearly parted ways with the New Patriotic Party. All that is left for him to do right now is to ensure that he causes as much damage to the fortunes of the party as he may be allowed by the key operatives of the NPP to get away with. I also really don't think that the former CEO of the Volta River Authority has anything meaningful to offer either the party or our national political culture, other than what he has already done so far and/or has continued to do. The man has also rudely indicated that he is preparing with his gang of opportunistic upstarts to take over the reins of party stewardship; so what are Nii Ayikoi Otoo and his associates of the NPP-Disciplinary Committee waiting for in order to give Tarzan the logical heave-ho?It also clearly appears that no binding conditions or stipulations came along with his two-year suspension, other than his Mickey Mouse's letter of apology, else Dr. Wereko-Brobby would not already be doing the media rounds bad-mouthing the party leadership. Even so, Mr. Ayikoi Otoo, an Attorney-General under the Kufuor administration, has indicated the preparedness of the party leadership to up the ante for the obdurate Dr. Wereko-Brobby, by possibly expelling the leader of the still-birthed United Ghana Movement. Now, this is the language of resolute leadership. And if Mr. Ayikoi Otoo and his Disciplinary Committee associates can follow up this cautionary note with prompt action, it would definitely serve the party well in the offing. As for Tarzan's rather tacky - and downright nasty - attempt to "nepoticize" his morbid and inveterate antipathy for NPP flagbearer Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the least remarked about it the better. Suffice it to observe here, at least in passing, that the man whom Tarzan clearly believes to be his political stumbling block, a nephew of the NPP flagbearer, is capable of creditably duking it out with the Radio-Eye man.For me, though, Dr. Wereko-Brobby seems too desperate to deign to meaningfully engage. He painfully recognizes the fact that he is irrecoverably naked in terms of political fortunes, and tragically believes that about the only remarkable alternative left to him is to bring down to his "marshy" level - or mosh pit - people who are not very mindful of their sense of dignity and self-respect.Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe, Jr., Ph.D.
