The maiden edition of the Cowbell National Junior Elite Athletics Championship has been launched at the Media Center of the Accra Sports Stadium with a call to unearth the next generation of athletes to win laurels for the nation. The 3-day event is scheduled to take place from the 8th-10th of August, 2013. Ten teams from all the regions of Ghana would take part in eighteen competitions with the first three athletes in each event receiving a full year’s scholarship.
Promasidor Ghana Limited, producers of cowbell and other food products are sponsoring the event to the tune of a whooping GHC 430,000 with GHC 144,000.00 devoted to the scholarship scheme. Felix Tettey is the Sales and Marketing Manager of Promasidor Ghana and he is been telling JoySports why her company is in the business of unearthing the next generation of athletes.
“We are in the business of nurturing and one of the cardinal ingredients is exercising through sport and that’s one of the main reasons for being in sports which sits very much with our business. We have realized that athletics have slipped down the slippery slope and we want to recover that. We believe the Inter Colleges of yesteryears are nothing today.
You don’t see young people in sport and we believe that this will begin to be the seed to rekindle this interest and to create opportunity for young people.
The Chairman of the Ghana Athletics Association Professor Francis Dodoo expressed his delight at this innovative project as this would go a long to unearth athletes from the Senior High schools like it existed in the past.
Also in attendance were the various Physical Education Directors from all ten regions who are to ensure that talents are nurtured and developed to compete at the highest levels to win laurels for Ghana.
