The Head of the legal department of Zoomlion Ghana Limited has stated that the company will respond appropriately when the report on the investigations into the activities of the Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) is made available to them. Mr Kwame Djan explained that the company had not seen a copy of the report which reportedly cited the Zoomlion for wrongdoing. A ministerial committee – set up by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in April this year – was tasked to investigate some alleged corrupt acts at GYEEDA, and the committee, after completing its work, presented the report to President John Mahama on July 16, 2013. The committee reviewed the entire process and advised the media or any other persons with information to assist the committee to help the investigations. But Mr Djan, in an interview with the Daily Graphic, maintained that the company had not sighted the report and that it would be pre-emptive to comment on something that has not been presented to it. He said until the government made the report public and presented a copy to the company, Zoomlion would not respond to the issues that were being discussed in the media. Mr Djan cautioned other persons and social commentators commenting on the purported report to be mindful of their comments, otherwise the company would advise itself on what legal actions to take if such issues turned out to be false, especially when it bordered on the high-earned reputation of the company. “We respect the views of such persons but will not allow the name of the company to be dragged in the mud, since the legal department is monitoring critically all such comments,” the lawyer added. For him, the company was making efforts to resolve the sanitation problems in the country and thus would not be distracted by rumour-mongering. A waste management institute which has been built by Zoomlion, Mr Djan said, would soon be inaugurated to provide the human resource base for dealing with the waste menace. According to the purported report, GYEEDA had been implicated in a lot of financial and procedural malpractices which prompted the sector minister, Mr Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, to halt all activities in relation to the scheme and also stop the scheme from developing other modules. President Mahama, upon receiving the report, served notice of a radical restructuring of GYEEDA with a promise to bring to book persons who had been cited for any wrongdoing. Speculations are rife in the media that Zoomlion and rlg Communications, organisations responsible for the implementation of the waste and sanitation, and the youth in ICT modules of the GYEEDA respectively, have been implicated in the report but the companies are yet to officially respond to those allegations.
