The Ghana Police Service is under pressure to clarify comments by its chief criminal investigator Maame Tiwaa Addo-Danquah on the status of three kidnapped girls.

The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department Maame Tiwaa Addo-Danquah has backtracked on her comment that ‘we know where the girls are and they are safe’.

By May 13, 2019 this comment made on April 4, 2019 had changed. She now says, her earlier comment was to ‘give the family hope’.

But it has let off public anger and condemnation at the police chief who has seen a meteoric rise in rank over the past two years.

Her explanation that her comments have been misunderstood has done little to dissuade a queue of critics from calling for her sack or resignation.

Joining the queue to analyse the Commissioner of Police’s comment, former Gender and Social Protection minister Nana Oye Lithur said while she would rather ‘give her the benefit of the doubt’, her comments are nonetheless confusing.

“Should we take the latter or the former?” she asked on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Wednesday.

The former minister noted the new twists to the kidnapping saga should impress on the police service, the need for clarification.

‘The Ghana Police Service owes Ghanaians an explanation…we have a right to that information’ she piled pressure.

With a perceived increase in the spate of kidnappings, the security services should have rolled out a national sensitization campaign, she said.

The police should have by now addressed the country revealing the trends and targets and the times when kidnappings are likely, Nana Oye Lithur explained.

She called on the police and the government to involve strategic institutions like the Information Services Department and religious organisation to roll out a campaign to raise alerts and alarms.
