The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has apologised to residents of Weija after 10 chlorine gas cylinders being sent to its treatment plant fell off a trailer and rolled dangerously into their homes on Monday night.Although there were no casualties in Monday's incident, residents say it was the fourth of such accidents in the last few years.Public Relations Manager of Ghana Water Company Ltd, Stanley Martey, told Joy News the company is taking measures to minimise such accidents."We are talking to the owners [of the truck] who have been carrying the cylinders and the chemicals to the treatment plant", he said. But the Public Relations Manager could not make a firm promise that such dangerous accidents will not happen again.According to him, "We all must know that accidents are inevitable, they could happen anytime so we can only pray very little [to prevent such accidents]".However, the residents say such life threatening incidents are becoming regular events in the Weija area and called for the reconstruction of the road. One resident recalls how a trailer skidded off the road and plunged into an empty apartment.Chlorine gas, which is highly effective in the treatment of water, could also be dangerous when exposed to humans.Inhalation of chlorine gas can cause difficulty in breathing, chest pains, cough, eye irritation, increased heartbeat, rapid breathing, and death. Exposure would be a very traumatic experience. The Weija water treatment plant of the GWCL produces over 50 million gallons of water a day to serve Accra and Tema residents.
