Some fishermen and canoe owners in the Jomoro District have sworn an oath not to engage in illegal fishing practices following reports that some fishermen still engage in the practice.
Nana Ibrahim Quansah, Chief Fisherman for Newtown Landing Beach, told the GNA that 40 canoe owners and fishermen had already sworn the oath and any fisherman or canoe owner caught engaging in illegal fishing would have his/her fishing materials confiscated and prosecuted.
Explaining the essence of the exercise, Nana Quansah, said it was meant to complement government’s efforts at clamping down on illegal fishing methods.
He appealed to other landing beaches in the country to emulate their example in order to bring sanity into the fishing sector.
