Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, is set to lead the distribution of some 1,000 packs of ‘Be Girl Period Panties’ to school girls in the Manhyia South Constituency of the Ashanti Region.
Ghana joined the rest of the world to celebrate World Menstrual Hygiene Day on Tuesday.
The day was instituted in 2014 to become an annual awareness day aimed at highlighting the importance of good menstrual hygiene management.
The Manhyia South Legislator said the gesture is to further deepen his commitment to breaking the barriers that impede access to education by all manner of people.
According to him, any support to the girl-child to stay in school and remain healthy is worth promoting and he is prepared to do more to ensure the girl-child stayed in school.
“it is not acceptable for the education of girls to be adversely affected because of a natural cycle that we all ultimately benefit from,” he explained.
The Happy School Girl Project will from Tuesday, May 28, facilitate Menstrual Hygiene Management sessions and distribute over 1,000 packs of Be Girl Period Panties to school girls in the Education Minister’s Constituency.
The ‘Happy School Girl Project’ has commended the Education Minister for showing and want other legislators to follow his example to help girls to be educated in order to reach their full potentials.
“While we acknowledge this gesture, we call on all well-meaning Ghanaians and business organizations to join in our collective efforts,” they called.
The project also urged the Women’s Caucus in Parliament, through its chairperson Hon. Sarah Adjoa Sarfo who doubles as Deputy Majority Leader to facilitate legislation that will seek to check gender inequalities which exist in such unnoticeable forms.
The theme of Menstrual Hygiene Day 2019 was “It's Time for Action.”
