One person, Uber driver, is in police custody over the reported kidnapping of two Canadians in Ahodwo, a suburb of Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi on Tuesday. 

Although the identity of the driver remains undisclosed, Joy News’ Ohemeng Tawiah reported Thursday that the suspect is believed to be the driver who transported the Canadians from their hotel.

Reports indicate that the two Canadians are Bailen Chitty,  19years and Lauren Patricia  Catherine, 20 years.

The police have confirmed the kidnapping.

In a statement Thursday they called on the media to be circumspect in their reportage.

The Police also called on the general public to volunteer useful information to assist investigators in their work. 

Meanwhile, a team of experts from Canada and the United Kingdom are in the country to assist in the investigations.

The development so far

Luv News’ checks reveal the two women were forced into a vehicle at about 8:20 pm just when they had stepped out of their apartment at Silver Spring in Kumasi.

Other media sources say the Canadian Embassy is collaborating with the Ghanaian police to locate the victims.

Not too long ago, a 30-year-old Indian man was also kidnapped in Kumasi by gun-wielding men.

The kidnappers demanded a $500,000 ransom after sending photos of the victim to his family with a gun pointed to his head.

Umpakan Chodri was later rescued at Parkoso in the Asokore-Mampong Municipality by a team of police officers.

Before Umpakan’s abduction, police had foiled a kidnap-for-ransom incident involving a diplomat.

Sixty-one-year-old Nabil Makram Basbous, the Consular-General and Head of Mission of Estonia to Ghana was also kidnapped during his regular morning walk in his neighbourhood in Accra.

Basbous was abducted by three gunmen suspected to be Nigerians.

The ambassador was held hostage in an unknown location until he was rescued by the Police.

Police are currently under pressure to rescue some three girls who were kidnapped in Takoradi, the Western Region.

Meanwhile, three girls remain missing after they were reported kidnapped in Takoradi, the Western Region capital.

President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has promised to get tough on what he describes as the “phenomenon of kidnappings” in the country.

Speaking to members of the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) at the Jubilee House on Monday, the President said he is determined to deal with the recent kidnapping scare.

“We are all concerned about this phenomenon of kidnappings which we have not known. Our brothers and sisters in Nigeria have known it. But we have not known it in this country and we need to do something about it to make sure that it doesn’t become a feature of our society.

“I am very, very determined on the issue and decisions are being taken as we seek what will be a clear manifestation of the determination I have to deal with this matter,” he said.
