As the nation prepares for the verdict of the Supreme Court hearing the 2012 election petition case, leading waste management company Zoomlion Ghana Ltd. has embarked on a nationwide peace and sanitation campaign to propagate peace messages through general cleaning of communities within the country. On Friday, staff of Zoomlion Ghana visited the Ashaiman market and the main lorry station, to de-silt gutters, sweep the streets and educate the public on the importance of maintaining a clean and sanitary environment.Sanitation guards and environmental health officers were also on hand to educate the public on the sanitation bye-laws cautioning them that authorities will not hesitate in prosecuting offenders. The Tema district operations supervisor of Zoomlion Ghana Ltd., Eric Sam-Addo explained that the “Peace Clean-Up Exercise” is being carried out in all ten regions of the country with the aim to drum home the message of peace ahead of the ruling on the 2012 election petition currently before the Supreme Court. He added that the exercise will continue even after the pronouncement of the verdict, come 29th August 2013 to ensure a clean, green and healthy Ghana. He explained that nations develop in peace and as a result officials of Zoomlion will during the peace clean-up exercise spread the peace message even as they promote proper sanitation amongst Ghanaians.Speaking to the media after the Clean-up exercise at Ashaiman, Mr Robert Kwaku Adjei, National Environmental Sanitation Coordinator for Zoomlion expressed concern about the attitude of the general public towards cleanliness.“Sanitation is everybody’s business and so people should not sit aloof when they hear about clean-ups. People should rather come out in their numbers to join in the cleaning of their own environment”, he stressed. He charged opinion leaders in all communities to initiate regular clean-up exercises to rid the communities of filth, and added that Zoomlion was ever prepared to support with sanitary logistics, organizations which would initiate programmes to rid the environment of filth.Mr Adjei hinted that Sanitation Guards and Environmental Health Officers are arresting and prosecuting sanitary offenders across the country, to serve as a deterrent to others who flout sanitary regulations. He was emphatic that all landlords who do not have refuse bins for the storage of refuse shall be arrested and prosecuted. Also, “all landlords in Accra who do not have domestic toilet facilities shall also be arrested and prosecuted in the law courts”, he indicated. He urged all religious leaders to devote about ten minutes of their sermon time to preach the good news about environmental sanitation, as “cleanliness, we all know, is next to Godliness”.
