The Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU) made up of general manpower base of the various public universities have announced an indefinite withdrawal of their services starting Monday.
The TEWU in a statement say they are embarking on strike following feet dragging by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission in addressing their grievances following their migration onto the single spine salary structure.
The statement said TEWU "has come to the realization that issues that we have brought before Fair Wages and Salaries Commission have never been given fullest attention".
The Union therefore want the Commission to restore risk allowance, cashiers allowance, electricity subsidy allowance, 15% special allowance and hospital allowance.
They also want a review of the pay policy to correct what they say are disparities and distortions in the grading structure of unionized employees of the public universities.
Thirdly, they called for a restoration of the annual incremental credits since the implementation of the single spine pay policy.
Finally, the Union want the introduction of critical support for teaching, learning and research allowance for unionized employees of public universities.
The strike is likely to worsen the situation on the university campuses even with the return of UTAG.
