A clash between the youth at Denkyira Ayanfuri in the Upper Denkyira West Municipality in the Central region and members of the Operation Vanguard on Friday afternoon has led to the death of two persons and injuries to two others who are in critical condition.
About 50 policemen including a reinforcement team from Diaso are in the town to prevent further clashes.
Some of the youth at Ayanfuri and members of the Operation Vanguard clashed Friday afternoon after the Operation Vanguard arrested two youth who were engaged in illegal mining.
The names of the two deceased were given as Kweku Adjei and Fabio.
Two other persons were said to be in critical condition one at the Dunkwa Government Hospital and the other at the Effia Nkwanta Hospital in Takoradi.
The taxi, which rushing the injured persons also hit and critically injured a motor rider making the injured four.
According to the Divisional Commander of Police for Dunkwa, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Mr. Innocent Avevor the Operation Vanguard team rushed one of the injured to the Perseus Mining Company's hospital while the other, the motor rider was rushed to the Dunkwa Government Hospital.
ACP Avevor told Graphic Online that two of the youth were arrested by some members of the Operation Vanguard in the concessions of the Perseus Mining Company on Thursday night.
He said in solidarity with the arrested youth, some youth of the town confronted the Operation Vanguard team on a street towards Gyaman at Ayanfuri on Friday afternoon and demanded the release of their colleagues.
In the ensuing clash, shots were fired hitting and injuring two persons. The two were pronounced dead at the hospital.
A source at Ayanfuri told Graphic Online that some of the youth, visibly angry gathered at the lorry station and chanted war songs whilst Operation Vanguard vehicles were also seen loaded with armed men.
Meanwhile, the police have taken custody of the two arrested persons which resulted in the clashes.
