The Business Development Minister has called on young and upcoming businesses to persevere in order to become prosperous businesses tomorrow.
According to Alhaji Mohammed Ibrahim Awal, perseverance is key in building any forms of business from scratch, charging the young people not to give up in spite of challenges.
Speaking at the Melcom@30 celebrations held at the Black Star Square to present the grand prizes comprising 30 Motorbikes, 30 brand new cars to deserving winners of Melcom@30 raffle draw supervised by The National Lottery Authority, Dr. Mohammed Awal said, to be a successful businessman or woman one must have “clear vision and purpose, good work ethics and customer appreciation” as demonstrated by Group Chairman of Melcom, Bhagwan Khubchandani 30 years ago.
For his part, the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, called on The Group to sell more made-in- Ghana goods in coming years…,”I want to walk through Melcom shops in the next five years and see your shelves covered with over 50% of made-in- Ghana goods/products”
In his address, the Director of Communication at The Melcom Group of Companies, Godwin Avenorgbo praised, Bhagwan Khubchandani for his vision and reiterated that “one of the key role players in the attainment of the objectives of those historic landmarks, Mr. Bhagwan Khubchandani is the key figure we celebrate today. He is the one who envisioned a business entity that could stand the test of time and grow to become the point of reference in Ghana”.
According to him, “as we celebrate Melcom@30 today we trace our footsteps back to 1929 when the first generation of Khubchandani’s in Ghana arrived at our shore and fell in love with the then Gold Coast and for a long-time committed themselves to good citizenship, investment and the growth of this nation’s economic well-being.
The major landmarks we can recall with historic nostalgia include Glamour Departmental Stores, Glamour Farms, Glamour Garment Factory and Maharaja Restaurant.
That phase of his journey began on the 10th September 1989 exactly 30years ago today with a single shop in Accra Central”.
Mr. Avenogbo used the occasion to make mention of the strides made by Melcom over the last 30 years of operations in Ghana : Gargantuan steps in improved merchandising visibility ,better utilization of floor space, wider range of varieties for customer convenience, more specialized Departments Facilitation of close proximity to cut down on customer travel distance to a shopping destination.
