The Gomoa District Assembly has expressed gratitude to President John Agyekum Kufuor and the leadership of Parliament for the prompt action taken on the petition the Assembly presented to them over the suspension of the Legislative Instrument (LI) on the establishment of Gomoa East District, one of the 25 new Districts created recently.
Parliament suspended Legislative Instrument 1883 which gave backing to the creation of Gomoa East Assembly, which would have been passed on the December 14 2007 due to an impasse over the location of the capital at Gomoa Afransi.
Some chiefs and opinion leaders wanted the capital of the new District to be sited at Gomoa Potsin instead.
On hearing that the LI was suspended, the Assembly petitioned the President and Parliament to ignore and protest submitted over the location of the capital and to go ahead to do what they felt was good for the District.
According to the petition, which was signed by all the 81 members of the Assembly, the large population and landmark of the current Gomoa District, which is the largest in the Central Region, made work of the Assembly very difficult, hence their demand for the decision to split it into two.
Mr Fred Oscar Abban, the Presiding Member and Madam Joyce Aidoo, District Chief Executive in a statement issued at Apam noted with gratitude that on receiving the petition, the suspended LI was relayed in Parliament and referred to the Subsidiary Legislation Committee of the Assembly for consideration.
They expressed the hope that the Committee would work expeditiously when Parliament reconvened from the Christmas recess to enable it to submit its report on time.
