The Akyem Swedru Circuit Court on Thursday sentenced Kwame Owusu, a 20-year-old unemployed to seven years imprisonment
in hard labour for ransacking a drinking bar.
Police Chief Inspector Ben Osei Kwadwo, prosecuting told the court, presided over by Mr Edward Kwame Bosompem Apenkwah that the complainant is a carpenter who also operates a drinking bar at Akyem Oda Old Town.
He said on December 21 last year, the complainant closed from the day’s work at about 2300 hours and locked the drinking bar and went home.
Later at about 0300 hours, the complainant left to attend nature’s call
at a public latrine, which is situated behind the drinking bar.
While at the toilet he heard an un-usual noise inside the bar and with
the assistance of a witness, they entered the bar and met Owusu in an inner room.
The prosecutor said Owusu, on seeing the complainant and the witness, engaged them in a fight.
He said during the fight, Owusu bit the complainant on his right hand and tried to escape but with the help of people who had been attracted to the scene, he was arrested and handed over to the police.
Owusu had ransacked drawers and boxes in the bar and also parked sound systems in the bar to a different corner to be carried away.
The prosecutor said Owusu in his caution statement confessed that he went into the bar to steal money but because he could not get any money he decided to steal the sound systems.
