The Crops Research Institute wants government to incorporate good quality yam seed technologies in the country’s agricultural development agenda.
Head of Biotechnology, Prof. Marian Quain, believes they can guarantee small-holder yam farmers bumper yield and creat employment opportunities.
She was speaking at the institute’s open day at Fumesua, near Kumasi.
Yam seed availability in Ghana is a major constraint as it is estimated to account for between 40 per cent and 50 per cent of cultivation cost.
Aeroponics, a method of growing plants in a soil-less-air environment, with nutrient water has been tested and proven effective in yam seed production.
